You open a message, decide you want help writing the reply, move to a separate drafting app, enter a prompt, copy the answer, return to the message and paste it. That process can work. But for a short reply, it can feel like the setup has become the task.
An integrated keyboard offers another route: stay in the text field and use voice input or AI drafting there. This is a workflow choice, not a promise of a measured productivity gain.
Separate useful context from extra steps
A separate writing app may be the right place for a long document, a research-heavy answer or a draft that needs collaboration. The problem is not switching apps in itself. It is doing the same transfer repeatedly for a task that only needs a few sentences.
Before changing your setup, map one real reply: where do you read it, where do you draft, where do you revise, and where do you send? If the movement helps you think, keep it. If it is only moving text, try an in-field workflow.
Try this with one low-stakes message
- Read the incoming message and decide what your answer needs to do.
- Tap its reply field with EkkoBoard selected as your keyboard.
- If you know the wording, use dictation. If you need a draft, use the separate AI button and speak a brief.
- Read the inserted result in context. Edit anything that is wrong or too strong.
- Send through the messaging app only when the text is ready.
The last step remains yours. Drafting in a text field is not permission to send an unreviewed answer.
Tell the tool the facts you want in the reply
"Write a short reply thanking someone for the invitation. Say I can't make dinner Friday, but I'd like to find another time. Friendly, no apology paragraph, and don't suggest a date."
Notice the boundary: do not suggest a date. A useful draft should not create a commitment because the wording sounds natural. If the incoming message asks several questions, make sure your brief covers the ones you intend to answer.
Use keyboard controls for the final pass
EkkoBoard includes undo, redo, select all, copy and clipboard tools in its toolbar. These help with the text-insertion workflow. If a result is almost right, revise the existing draft rather than generating a completely new one and losing a sentence you wanted to keep.
For repeated wording, consider whether a voice shortcut or a personal-dictionary replacement is a better tool than fresh AI generation. A signature should usually be consistent. A customer-specific explanation should not become a canned reply that misses their question.
Know what the interface does and does not solve
Android's input-method framework lets keyboards deliver text to the focused field. That explains how writing can happen where you already type. It does not guarantee that every app's custom editor behaves the same way, or that the AI knows the conversation you are answering.
Supply the relevant facts in your brief. Do not assume a drafting tool has read a thread just because it appears beside the reply field. Avoid speaking sensitive information aloud in a shared space.
Judge the result, not the idea
Try five ordinary replies. Keep notes on extra copy-and-paste steps, corrections and whether the draft still sounds like you. If the keyboard route reduces unnecessary movement for your messages, keep it. If a long or complex reply benefits from a separate drafting space, use that instead.
